Studies have found that larger breeds age more quickly than smaller ones. Giant breeds like Great Danes have a shorter average lifespan and reach senior status earlier (around 5–6 human years), while small breeds like Chihuahuas may not be considered senior until 8–10 human years. Our calculator adjusts the per-year multiplier accordingly: Small ≈ 5, Medium ≈ 6, Large ≈ 7, Giant ≈ 8 dog years per additional human year after the first two.

No, the 7:1 ratio is a rough simplification that doesn't reflect modern research. Dogs mature much faster than humans in the first two years of life. A 1-year-old dog is already capable of reproduction — equivalent to a 15-year-old human. Later, the aging rate slows down and varies significantly by breed size, making the one-size-fits-all 7:1 rule inaccurate for most dogs.

Our slider supports ages from 0 to 30 human years, which covers the vast majority of dogs (the oldest confirmed dog lived to 31 human years). For giant breeds that may have shorter lifespans, 30 human years is well beyond their typical maximum, so the range accommodates all breeds comfortably. The dog-year equivalent can reach over 200 for older small-breed dogs.
